Home Business Idea. Medical Transcription.

Medical transcription is the process of converting voice-recorded reports, dictated by doctors and other health care professionals, into typewritten format(to cut down on misinterpretations) . It is considered to be an allied health profession in which formal training is not required, but preferred.
Medical transcription can be performed at the health care office itself or remotely. If you are familiar with medical terminology, are skilled at editing medical text, can listen and type simultaneously, have above average typing skills, can follow written and verbal instructions well, and can work a transcriber machine(what doctors dictate into), then being a medical transcriber may be the home business for you!
As a medical transcriptionist you will be accurately transcribing patient information such as name, address, age, social security number, medical history, and medical procedures. You will be keeping a transcription log, with medical terminology, for each patient and doctor. Sorting, copying, preparing, assembling, and filing records and charts may be required depending on your location. You will continously distribute transcribed reports and collect more dictation tapes to transcribe. If there is any missing or late dictation information, you will be required to follow up with physicians to get it! You will need to double check the doctors dictations and your finished work for accuracy.
Start-up costs are under $2000 if you already own a computer, fax, phone, and have access to the internet. You aren't required to have formal training but if you want to get any work as a medical transcriptionist I would suggest getting certified. See M-Tec for online medical transcription courses. Many MT schools have job placement services but if you want to work from home independently I would suggest looking for freelance or telecommuting MT jobs online. I post MT job leads here when I come across them so keep checking back or you can visit, MTjobs.com, Craigslist, Backpage, and Monster. Also check your local community newspapers and newsletters. Some medical transcription services may allow you to work from home. See MT services below.
On average the employed medical transcriptionist makes $35,000 annually. Independent transcribers tend to make more.
